Updating to the latest version of BriefCatch Standalone is quick and straightforward. Follow the steps below to make sure you're using the most recent release. We release updates several times per year, typically when we introduce new writing suggestions, enhanced examples, or other feature improvements.

Note: BriefCatch Standalone does not update automatically. All updates must be applied manually. This applies to both enterprise and retail users.
Update Notification
When we release a new version of BriefCatch Standalone, a notification appears under the BriefCatch S tab in the Word ribbon.
Enterprise admins can turn this notification off for users with the DISABLEAUTOUPDATE parameter when deploying. If you've already deployed, add the noAutoUpdate file to the bcms directory. See Disabling update notifications for users.
Mass Deployment Updates (Enterprise)
When a new major release is available, we'll notify you by email and make the latest installer available in the BriefCatch Standalone Portal, under the BriefCatch Standalone tab. IT administrators or designated users can then download and distribute it within your organization.
To update, reinstall or redeploy the installer on top of the existing version. There's no need to uninstall first. All user settings and license files remain intact unless you include a new license file in the update. This manual approach keeps your organization in full control of deployment timing and versions. Please Note: Make sure to use the same installer when updating. If you installed using our machine installer (BCMSSetupLM.msi), you must use the same installer to avoid conflicts. If you're unsure, see Which installer was used to install BriefCatch Standalone?
Manual Updates (Retail/Professional Users)
Please Note: Make sure to close all Microsoft Office applications before installation to ensure a smooth setup.
BriefCatch Standalone is now sold through enterprise plans only. These steps are for existing individual subscriptions.
Follow the steps below to update to the latest version of BriefCatch Standalone:
- Visit the BriefCatch Standalone Portal and log in to your account.
- Click the BriefCatch Standalone tab under the BriefCatch Software heading. The latest version of Standalone will be shown under the heading.
- Click the green Download BriefCatch button to save the installer to your computer.
- Make sure all Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.) are closed before proceeding.
- Open BriefCatchInstaller.exe and follow the prompts to update BriefCatch Standalone.
- Open Word and ensure the BriefCatch S tab appears with the correct version installed.
- Once finished, you now have the latest version of BriefCatch Standalone installed! Your license and settings will remain the same.
