BriefCatch is a natural language processing software system that is designed to help legal professionals improve their writing skills and create more persuasive and effective documents. The system works by analyzing written documents and providing users with real-time feedback on elements such as sentence length, readability, and word choice. The software analyzes documents for tone, readability, and grammar.

This guide outlines the technical requirements, data practices, and deployment details for each BriefCatch product. Our platform includes multiple versions to support a wide range of Microsoft Word environments, from modern cloud-based deployments to legacy on-premise configurations.

No Data Retention

BriefCatch does not store, retain, or use your document text for any purpose. Document content is processed only in memory as needed to offer editing suggestions, then immediately discarded. No text is ever logged, saved, cached, or used to train models.

This applies to all BriefCatch products, including BriefCatch Next and BriefCatch 3. BriefCatch Standalone processing is done locally.

Products Offered

BriefCatch Next is the current, cloud-based version of our legal writing platform. It provides the most accurate editing features, the newest functionality, and the best user experience. All future product development and enhancements are focused on BriefCatch Next.

BriefCatch Standalone is available to organizations that do not yet meet the technical requirements for BriefCatch Next. It is a fully local, on-device version designed for more restrictive environments.

BriefCatch Next

BriefCatch Next is a cloud-based Microsoft Office Add-in built using the latest Microsoft Azure Centralized Deployment technologies. It installs directly through Microsoft 365 and runs inside Word with no executables, no installers, and no elevated permissions.

All new features, accuracy improvements, and UI updates are deployed exclusively to BriefCatch Next. We strongly recommend it for all organizations whose Microsoft Word environments meet the technical requirements below.

Technical Requirements for BriefCatch Next

Microsoft Word
  • Windows: Word for Microsoft 365 (recommended) or Word 2021+ (Version 2108 or later)
  • Mac: Word for Microsoft 365 (recommended) or Word 2021+ (Version 16.40 or later)
  • Word Online: Microsoft 365 Online (web version, Windows or Mac)

BriefCatch 3

BriefCatch 3 is also an Office Add-in and shares the same technical requirements as BriefCatch Next. While BriefCatch 3 remains available during the transition period, it will be phased out in 2026. New customers and deployments should use BriefCatch Next.

BriefCatch Standalone

BriefCatch Standalone is provided for environments that cannot support Microsoft’s modern Office Add-in framework. It is a COM/VSTO add-in deployed to user machines via an EXE or MSI. All processing occurs fully on the local workstation, with no cloud connectivity required.
